SPECIALIST NEURODEVELOPMENTAL NURSE

Stephen Chandler

I have over 25 years’ experience working in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).  Having worked both in NHS and private practice, I have cared for young people who are experiencing a range of Mental Health and Neurodevelopmental conditions and have acquired a wealth of skills and experience.

I have highly specialist expertise in the assessment of children and young people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I also practice in the treatment of depression, anxiety, Self-harm, Eating Disorders and many other mental health difficulties that children and young people struggle with.

I am very aware that each child I work with who has an Autistic Spectrum Disorder is different and will have their own challenges and needs, some of which will extend beyond the core elements of difficulties in socialisation and communication. I have experience in working with issues often associated with Autistic Spectrum Disorders such as ADHD, anxiety, sensory issues, and anger problems.

I am very much aware of the challenges that Autistic Spectrum Disorders can present for children and their families. Through the assessment process I endeavour to help families gain a better understanding of their child’s functioning and difficulties which in turn can lead to meaningful advice, guidance, and recommendations aimed at supporting them to deal effectively with the issues which impact upon their functioning and daily lives.

In both my NHS role and my work with ChATS, I regularly conduct assessments for Autism and ADHD. I am trained in internationally recognised Autism assessment tools and carry out specialist ADHD assessments in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance. Within my NHS role, I am qualified to prescribe medications, which enables me to offer a comprehensive package of care, including treatment for the ongoing management of ADHD. While prescribing is not currently undertaken within ChATS, this expertise allows me to advise and guide families on potential treatment options following an assessment. We are also exploring the possibility of introducing prescribing services within ChATS in the future.
